As part of our Summer Gurmat Camp series, participants explored emotional regulation through the lives and experiences of Bhai Taru Singh Ji, Guru Har Krishan Ji Maharaj, Bhai Joga Singh Ji, and the historical context of Aurangzeb. This session connected Sikh history and Gurmat teachings with practical tools for understanding and navigating emotions.
Understanding Mental Health & Sikhi
Presented by our intern, Muskaan Kaur, this session explored the relationship between mental health and Sikhi, creating space to examine emotional wellbeing through both contemporary mental health frameworks and Sikh principles. Participants discussed culturally relevant approaches to understanding healing, resilience, and community care.
Mental Disorders 101
Led by our intern, Muskaan Kaur, this introductory session provided an accessible overview of common mental health disorders, their symptoms, and how they can affect individuals and communities. The goal was to build mental health literacy, reduce stigma, and encourage greater understanding and compassion.
Emotional Regulation & Color Zones
Led by our intern, Muskaan Kaur, this session introduced the Zones of Regulation framework as a practical way to identify emotions, recognize changes in emotional states, and develop healthy strategies for responding to them. Participants learned how emotional awareness can support communication, self-regulation, and overall wellbeing.
Immigrant Mental Health: Culturally Responsive, Strength-Based, and Narrative Approaches to Healing
This toolkit explores the unique mental health experiences of immigrant, undocumented, racialized, and diaspora communities, highlighting how immigration stress, systemic inequities, cultural disconnection, and intergenerational expectations can shape wellbeing. The session examined the limitations of traditional individual-focused mental health models and emphasized culturally responsive, community-centered, and strength-based approaches to healing that recognize the importance of family, collective identity, history, and community.
