Sikh-Punjabi Know Your Rights and Safety Strategies

This workshop examines the vital need for Know Your Rights education and safety strategies within Sikh-Punjabi communities. This workshop—developed by Umeed—addresses the importance of understanding constitutional rights and practical steps to take during interactions with law enforcement and immigration officials.

This presentation outlines key constitutional rights, focusing on the 4th and 5th Amendments, and provides clear guidance on how to assert those rights. Real-world scenarios and safety planning for families, including specific guidance for children, are discussed. The workshop emphasizes cultural context, communication strategies, and available resources to support community members.

Ideal for community leaders, service providers, and individuals seeking to empower and protect Sikh-Punjabi communities through knowledge and culturally informed support.

Defending Families, Building Futures: South Asian-Specific Strategies in Family Defense

Presented at the SOAR 2025 Summit, this workshop—led by Umeed-Hope in collaboration with the South Asian Legal Defense Fund—examines the growing threats of family separation facing South Asian immigrant families in the U.S. With rising immigration enforcement, child welfare surveillance, and systemic biases, families are increasingly vulnerable to unjust interventions.

This presentation outlines culturally specific family defense strategies, legal advocacy approaches, and rapid-response models that center dignity, language access, and holistic care. Real-world case studies highlight the impact of language barriers, over-policing, and cultural misunderstandings, while actionable solutions are provided for social workers, legal advocates, and community-based organizations.

Ideal for service providers, legal professionals, and community leaders working at the intersection of immigration, family defense, and gender-based violence.

ICE Facility Visit Questions (English + Gurmukhi)

We created a question guide for detention visits to help support non-English speaking detainees. The guide is available in Punjabi, Romanized Punjabi, and English so volunteers can communicate clearly during visits. It includes basic questions to understand people’s needs and make sure they are connected to support. When using it, always write down the person’s Alien Number (A#) and country of origin; this helps us keep track if they are moved between facilities.

If Someone You Love is Detained (English + Gurmukhi)

We created this guide for families with a loved one who has been detained. It can be overwhelming trying to navigate these systems on your own, especially in urgent moments. This guide walks through step-by-step how to find someone using the ICE locator, how to identify the facility they are in, and how to contact them. It also covers how to check court dates, understand basic legal options like bond or fighting a case, and how to find a lawyer.

We included practical details that families often need right away, like how to send letters (and the strict rules many facilities have), how to send money, and what information to write down like A-numbers and local inmate IDs. It also highlights the importance of asking about medical care and religious needs, especially for Sikh/Punjabi families.

This is meant to be a starting point to help you take the first steps and feel a little more prepared. Please share it with anyone who might need it.

Information Card (English + Gurmukhi)

This printable card was created as a simple tool to help people keep important information close at hand. It includes your name, attorney details, and an emergency contact so that in moments of urgency, confusion, or crisis, support systems can be contacted without delay. We encourage you to print this card and carry it with you as part of your everyday preparedness and care.
