UMEED-HOPE
is a Sikh-led coalition working in solidarity with other marginalized communities to dismantle systems of oppression and build a world rooted in justice, collective care, and liberation. Through mutual aid and community-driven initiatives, we address interconnected issues such as gender-based violence, abolition, mental health, anti-war efforts, and other forms of systemic injustice. Grounded in the Sikh values of service and equity, we believe in the power of collective action, fostering inclusive spaces where everyone has access to the resources they need and the opportunity to lead.
Founded in 2022 as a nonprofit, Umeed-Hope transitioned in 2024 into a Sikh-led mutual aid organization working in solidarity with marginalized communities to address systemic injustice, with a particular focus on ending family violence. Our team, composed of social workers, mental health professionals, and community advocates is dedicated to building justice through collective care, community power, and prevention.
Our name, Umeed, means hope, but to us, hope is not passive. It is something we carry, protect, and keep alive together. This is reflected in our logo: an eternally burning flame held within a Sikh-inspired double-edged form, drawing from the visual language of Sikh history, resistance, and sovereignty, including the legacy of the Sikh Empire. The flame represents the hope that lives within our communities, while the roots beneath it represent the history, people, and collective strength that ground us. The flame is eternally lit by the people. It is our communities who keep hope alive.
As a resource hub, Umeed-Hope provides training, prevention programming, and community-driven support designed to empower individuals, strengthen communities, and create lasting change. We believe that when we understand our roots, care for one another, and organize collectively, hope becomes a force for transformation.
